Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. When she was a little girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessional disorder and suffered from anxiety due to the word"association. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. Ford joined in the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she was not a fit. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however, by that time, she had already made her television debut in an episode from 1991 in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor that she started adding to her set in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
